Topic: Student Activism
Note: There is no recording of this session but we are hoping to post the slideshow soon.
We were super excited to host Dr. Sy Stokes's special session on student activism. Dr. Stokes is a postdoctoral fellow at the National Center for Institutional Diversity at the University of Michigan. His primary research is focused on campus racial climate and racial equity. He graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, with a BA in African American Studies, earned his Master's degree in higher education at the University of Pennsylvania, and completed his PhD in education at the University of Southern California. His dissertation is titled, "Into the Wildfire: Campus Racial Climate and the Trump Presidency." He is also a co-author of "But is it activist?: Interpretive criteria for activist scholarship in higher education." You may know him from his spoken word art: Dear White Counselor and The Black Bruins. He talked about student activism and political engagement in education, which empowered all of us to advance inclusion, equity, and racial justice in the classroom and on campus.
